FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — George Mihajlovic and Laci Lapalainen scored in the first eight minutes and Montreal cruised to a 3-1 victory over Inter Miami in Sunday’s regular-season finale.
Montreal needed a win and a loss against the Philadelphia Union to claim first place in the Eastern Conference. The Union beat Toronto 4-0.
Inter Miami, who have already clinched a place in the playoffs, recorded a four-game winning streak at home.
Mihajlovic scored in the fifth minute for Montreal (21-9-5), and Lapalainen added his goal three minutes later with an assist from Mihajlovic. Kei Kamara made it 3-0 at half-time with a goal in the 36th minute.
Mihajlovic and Kamara each finished with nine goals for Montreal, trailing only Rommel Kyoto with a team-high 15. Lapalainen’s goal was his third.
Montreal won six more games this season than in any other, scoring 65 points to surpass their previous high of 14. Montreal finished with 15 one-goal wins, second only to New England’s record of 18 set last season. The club have scored 63 (per half) goals this campaign, surpassing their previous record by 11??.
Inter Miami’s score came after an own goal by Montreal’s Joel Waterman in the 85th minute.
Gonzalo Higuain saw his five-goal streak end for Inter Miami (14-15-6).
